Log Substrate
Some mushrooms are better planted on logs such as willow, oak and beech. These include the oyster mushroom and the shitake mushroom. You do not plant straight onto the logs, really. You need dowels for that. These dowels are saturated with the mycelium, the part of the mushroom from where the mushrooms that we consume uprise. These dowels are then inserted into the log, sealed with some wax to prevent any contamination, saved in a dark and dry place till the mushrooms are ready to be collected. The logs must be secured from direct sunlight in addition to strong winds. So, much better wrap them in a black polythene bag. It would take around a year and a half for the fungis to colonize the whole log.
Straw Substrate
Perhapsone of the easiest substrate to deal with is the straw. Initially, you need to disinfect the straw. Do this by putting boiling water on the straw. When the straw has actually cooled spray the generate, which is included in the mushroom package. Make certain that you shake the bag with the straw and the generate to spread out the spawn equally. Seal the bag. Place this is a dark and damp place. The mushrooms can be gathered in about 6 weeks.

This is one of the standard ways of growing mushrooms. You use grain generate to inoculate the mushrooms into the manure or soil substrate.
